Web Directories
Older Web 1.0 type web directories that were really intended for navigating the web. I am including a few as examples for people who have never encountered an old school web directory.

Collector of URLs. This is the successor to the Dmoz.org directory, the largest human volunteer edited directory ever built. After Dmoz shut down some new volunteers established Curlie. They have been clearing out dead links and trying to get things back into working order. This is a huge directory and quite usable.

The problem with these old directories is, by listing important sites, they try and compete with search engines and that is hard to do. |
GoGuides directory was started by former Go.com directory editors after Disney shut down the Go.com directory. For many years, GoGuides maintained a smallish but quality directory which stuck to certain quality standards even after most other directories started selling listings for Pagerank.

IllumiRate has been around under different names for a long time. This is an example of a directory that is not edited by volunteers. By general directory standards Illumirate would be considered small.

JoeAnt is another legacy directory started by former Go.com Guides. It was set up to encourage, recruit and train new volunteer editors. It managed to avoid the impulse to sell listings for Pagerank. There is some dead listings in the index.
